Maypole Cake

My mother used to make
maypole cakes for our birthdays –
a decorated kitchen roll tube
filled with little gifts

wrapped in coloured tissue paper,
tied to matching ribbons
that hung like maypole ribbons.
The tube sat in a sponge ring

with white icing dripping down
the sides. We would all take
a ribbon and pull out a present
while we sang

Happy Birthday. I wonder
with modern supermarket cakes,
with tasteless fondant icing,
if anyone bothers to bake now?
